Frequently Asked Questions

How long do laptops last?

Laptops and computers last on average anywhere between 3 years (business computers) to 5+ years (personal computers), meaning that by now, most people have previously enjoyed devices they don’t know what to do with.

How could I extend the life cycle of my device?

Most times when a person upgrades to a new laptop, their previous device can be repurposed and may still have some usable life left. There are many low-income families or students who can benefit from that replaced computer.

What kind of technology will you accept?

We accept desktops, laptops (dual-core processor or greater), Macs, LCD monitors, USB keyboards, USB mice, networking equipment, and power cords. We welcome the opportunity to discuss the other possible donations such as iPads and other tablets, USB flash drives, RAM, hard drives, and surge protectors for families.

Will TechCharities wipe the data?

All hard drives are wiped clean of existing data. Once the hard drives have been wiped, TechCharities reinstalls Windows 10 Pro or Windows 11 when possible.

Do we supply a certificate of data destruction?

Yes, upon request. TechCharities is licensed through BitRaser to wipe and certify various levels of data destruction. Some levels of data destruction take only a few minutes and others take many minutes. If we are unable to wipe the data, then the hard drives are shredded. TechCharities will provide certified data erasure or disk shredding, as required.

How does TechCharities handle unusable equipment?

TechCharities is concerned about the environment and is committed to ensuring that all unusable equipment is disposed of property. If the device cannot be refurbished, it will be donated to certain companies to use for parts or to recycle properly.

Is there a tax deduction for my technology?

TechCharities is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, and all computer donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. A donation receipt will be provided if requested.
